It’s safe to say that Antti Niemi’s jitters are behind him.
After struggling in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals to the tune of five goals allowed, the Chicago Blackhawks goalie surrendered just one while making 32 saves in a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 2 to give his team a commanding 2-0 series lead. The Blackhawks are now just two wins away from ending the NHL’s longest championship drought.
In a defensive battle that was a stark contrast to the 6-5 shootout in the Finals opener, Niemi was the difference. He made 14 saves in the final period alone as Chicago thwarted a Philadelphia rally.
He was given the lead by teammates Martin Hossa and Ben Eager, who scored 28 seconds apart in the second period to give the Blackhawks a 2-0 advantage that they would never relinquish.
Simon Gagne cut the lead in half early in the third period with a power play goal, but the Flyers couldn’t get the equalizer. As a result, they now face the daunting task of doing something few teams ever have: Since the NHL went to best-of-seven in the finals in 1939, teams winning both Games 1 and 2 have won the Stanley Cup 41 of 45 times.

The Chicago Blackhawks rallied from a two-goal deficit on Sunday, ratcheting up the intensity to seize control in a 4-2 win over the San Jose Sharks to propel them to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1992. The win gave the Blackhawks a shocking sweep of the Western Conference’s No. 1 seed.
Chicago trailed 2-0 in the second period before storming back to tie it up. Then, on the power play with under six minutes remaining in regulation, Dustin Byfuglien put in a shot in front of the net to give the Blackhawks the game-winner. They later knocked in an empty-netter. Byfuglien’s goal was his third game-winner of the playoffs.
Chicago will now have a chance to end the longest Stanley Cup drought in NHL history. The franchise has gone 47 years since it last hoisted the cup. It will play the winner of the Philadelphia-Montreal series.
Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau scored in defeat for the Sharks.

The Detroit Red Wings let the opportunity to close out the Phoenix Coyotes slip through their grasp in Game 6.
They didn’t repeat the mistake in Game 7.
The 2009 Stanley Cup runners-up overwhelmed the hosts, advancing to the second round with a 6-1 win. Pavel Datsyuk found the back of the net twice in less than two minutes in a second-period outburst to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead they would never relinquish.
Detroit scored four unanswered after Phoenix closed the game to 2-1. Nicklas Lindstrom accounted for two of the tallies, scoring twice on the power play. Jimmy Howard was excellent in net, earning the victory by making 32 saves on 33 shots.
The Red Wings face the top-seeded San Jose Sharks in the second round.

The season ended in disappointing fashion for the Buffalo Sabres. The Eastern Conference’s No. 3 seed fell 4-3 to the 6th-seeded Boston Bruins in Game 6 of their first round matchup, eliminating the favorites to close the door on their season.
Tuukk Rask made 27 saves to lead the Bruins to victory, outplaying Sabres star goalie Ryan Miller in the decisive game. Boston is now tangled in a 2nd round series against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Miller made 28 saves, but it wasn’t enough. Buffalo trailed 4-1 late in regulation before scoring with an extra attacker to provide the final margin.
The season undoubtedly ends with regret for the Sabres, who scored the first goal in five of the six games in the series. They were ultimately undone by a non-existent power play unit, which went 0-for-19 for the series.

The Phoenix Coyotes avoided elimination on Sunday, overwhelming the host Detroit Red Wings to force Game 7 with a 5-2 win. The series heads back to Phoenix for the deciding game on Tuesday night.
The Coyotes got off to a great start, scoring short-handed four minutes into the game. But the second period was the decisive one in this contest; Phoenix tallied three goals in the frame, shocking a Detroit team that had dictated pace and peppered shots at will to no avail. The Coyotes eventually built a 5-1 advantage before surrendering a goal late in the game.
Ilya Bryzgalov made 31 saves for Phoenix, which also got goals from five different players. Lori Korpikoski, Mathieu Schneider, Radim Vrbata, Wojtek Wolski and Taylor Pratt all found the back of the net.
Brad Stuart and Darren Helm scored for the Red Wings. Jimmy Howard made 24 saves, but the Coyotes offense made life difficult for the young netminder with their opportunistic play.

The Montreal Canadiens refuse to go away.
Facing elimination, the No. 8 seed beat the top-seeded Washington Capitals on the road again, edging the hosts 2-1 to send the series back to Montreal for Game 6.
Jaroslav Halak was the hero for the Canadiens, making 37 saves in arguably the best performance of his career. The goalie made improbable save after improbable save as the underdogs clung to a slim lead. Montreal scored two goals in the first 7:01 of the game and fought off the Caps the rest of the way.
Washington had only lost four games at home prior to shootout this season, but have already lost two in this series alone. And shockingly, an overwhelming Caps offense has only scored once on 24 power plays in the series.
Michael Cammalleri and Travis Moen accounted for Montreal’s two goals. Game 6 is Monday night.

The Colorado Avalanche’s season is over. After giving the top-seeded San Jose Sharks all they could handle, the No. 8 seed Avalanche were finally eliminated, falling in Game 6 at home, 5-2.
Colorado actually held a 2-1 lead early in the third period, but just minutes later San Jose scored two goals in a span of 1:29 to recapture the lead, one it would never relinquish. The Sharks scored four unanswered goals in the final stanza to put away the pesky Avs.
Marek Svatos and Brandon Yip registered goals in defeat for Colorado.
Joe Pavelski, the hero in Game 4’s overtime win for the Sharks, netted two goals in victory.
